Ia memainkan peranan dengan menstrukturkan dan memodelkan pengetahuan ke dalam bentuk konseptual formal. Kajian berkaitan ontologi telah mendapat perhatian yang meluas di kalangan penyelidik sebagai salah satu mekanisme dalam perwakilan pengetahuan. Ontologi telah digunakan dalam pelbagai domain seperti biologi, perubatan, pendidikan, perdagangan, perniagaan, capaian maklumat, pengurusan pengetahuan dan sebagainya.

Perisian ditakrifkan oleh IEEE dan juga dipiawaikan dalam ISO/IEC 9000-3 sebagai aturcara komputer, tatacara, hal berkaitan dengan dokumentasi dan data yang terlibat dalam operasi sistem komputer. Manakala kualiti perisian pula ditakrifkan sebagai tahap yang mana sistem, komponen atau proses itu memenuhi spesifikasi keperluan dan memenuhi kehendak pengguna atau jangkaan pengguna. kualiti perisian adalah sebagai darjah gabungan pemilikan terhadap atribut sistem. Kualiti perisian mempunyai beberapa ciri atributnya seperti kebolehpercayaan, integriti, kebolehsenggaraan, kebolehlanjutan (enhanceability), kebolehgunaan, kemudahalihan dan kebolehgunaan.

 Kualiti perisian dapat menentukan kegagalan atau kejayaan sebuah produk perisian pada pasaran kompetitif. Ketepatan memodelkan atribut sistem sangat penting dalam menentukan kualiti perisian.

Listeria can grow and survive in many different foods. The growth and survival of
L. monocytogenes in foods is governed by a variety of environmental and ecological
factors. The success of L. monocytogenes as a foodborne pathogen is strongly
influenced by its ability to survive under wide adverse environmental conditions.
These include temperature, pH, acid, salt, water activity and modified atmosphere.
Understanding the factors affecting the growth and survival of L. monocytogenes
in foods may provide principles of preservation strategy that can be used by food
industry.

Di  dalam  satu aturcara C++, pengolahan banyak dilakukan ke atas data yang terdiri dari maklumat-maklumat seperti nombor-nombor dan rentetan huruf. Data ini berada dalam lokasi memori computer. Data ini boleh terdiri dari data pemalar (constant) atau pembolehubah (variable). Data pemalar tidak boleh bberubah, manakala, data pembolehubah boleh berubah nilainya. Dalam aturcara C++, data ini boleh diwakili oleh nama-nama yang dipanggil pencam (identifier) yang diberikan sendiri oleh pengaturcara. Pernyataan umpukan (assignment statement) adalah satu kaedah untuk pengaturcara memberikan sesuatu nilai kepada satu pencam pembolehubah.
