The Digital Learning Division, Centre for Academic Management and Development, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu continues to strengthen its digital learning ecosystem through the development of innovative technologies that support secure, reliable, and high-quality online teaching and assessment. As part of this commitment, the e-Learning Technical Team has developed QuizGuardian, an in-house online quiz proctoring platform designed to enhance the integrity, security, and reliability of online quizzes conducted through the University's Learning Management System (LMS).

Developed specifically to meet institutional teaching and learning requirements, QuizGuardian integrates directly with the Learning Management System, enabling lecturers to conduct monitored online quizzes without requiring students to install additional software or access external proctoring platforms. The platform has been designed to provide a seamless assessment experience while supporting the University's commitment to academic integrity and continuous digital innovation.

Seamless Integration with the Learning Management System

QuizGuardian operates as an integrated component of the University's Learning Management System. Lecturers can enable the platform when configuring an online quiz, allowing the required proctoring features to be activated automatically during the assessment.

Students are not required to access a separate application or website. Once QuizGuardian has been enabled by the lecturer, students simply access their online quiz through the Learning Management System using the same workflow they are already familiar with. The proctoring functions operate transparently in the background, creating a secure assessment environment while maintaining a simple and intuitive user experience.

Key Features

QuizGuardian provides a comprehensive range of proctoring capabilities that support fair and secure online assessments. Depending on the configuration selected by the lecturer, the platform may include:

Live webcam monitoring throughout the quiz session.

Microphone monitoring where required.

Screen sharing and screen activity monitoring.

Identity verification before the quiz begins.

Real-time monitoring and recording of quiz sessions.

Browser-based operation without requiring additional software installation.

These features assist lecturers in maintaining the integrity of online quizzes while allowing students to complete their assessments within a single, integrated learning environment.

Preparing for an Online Quiz

Students who are required to complete an online quiz using QuizGuardian are encouraged to prepare their devices before the scheduled assessment. Using the latest version of Google Chrome or another supported web browser is recommended to ensure full compatibility with the platform.

Students should verify that their webcam and microphone are functioning correctly, ensure that a stable internet connection is available, and prepare a quiet, well-lit environment before the quiz begins. When prompted, browser permissions for the webcam, microphone, and screen sharing should be granted to allow the proctoring features to function correctly. Accessing the quiz several minutes before the scheduled start time is also recommended to ensure that all required checks are completed successfully.

During the Online Quiz

During the assessment, students should follow all instructions provided by the lecturer and displayed by QuizGuardian. Students are expected to remain visible to the webcam throughout the quiz, avoid switching between browser tabs or applications unless instructed, and ensure that no unauthorised person is present within the camera's field of view.

These practices contribute to maintaining a fair, transparent, and secure assessment environment while supporting the University's academic integrity standards.

University-Wide Pilot Testing

QuizGuardian is currently undergoing a University-wide pilot testing programme involving online quizzes conducted across various faculties, academic programmes, and courses. The pilot has been designed to evaluate the platform under real teaching and learning conditions while collecting operational and technical data that will support future institutional implementation.

Throughout the pilot period, the e-Learning Technical Team will monitor the overall utilisation of QuizGuardian, including the number of online quizzes conducted, user participation, adoption across faculties and programmes, and overall usage trends. The information collected will provide valuable insights into how the platform performs across different learning environments and assessment scenarios.

The pilot programme will also evaluate the usability of QuizGuardian by gathering feedback from lecturers and students. User experiences, observations, and recommendations will be analysed to improve the platform's interface, workflow, accessibility, and overall user experience. The findings will support the continued enhancement of the platform before wider deployment.

In addition to usability, the pilot programme will assess the technical performance of QuizGuardian by monitoring server resource utilisation, network performance, response times, and the platform's ability to support multiple concurrent online quiz sessions. These findings will assist in determining the infrastructure capacity required for future expansion.

As QuizGuardian securely records proctoring sessions for review and quality assurance purposes, the pilot will also monitor storage utilisation and analyse the projected growth of recorded assessment data. This information will support future storage planning, infrastructure capacity forecasting, and long-term resource management.

The pilot programme will further identify any additional hardware, software, networking, or operational requirements necessary to support full-scale implementation. The evidence gathered throughout this evaluation will enable informed decisions regarding future infrastructure investment while ensuring that QuizGuardian remains secure, scalable, reliable, and sustainable as adoption continues to increase.

The outcomes of the pilot programme will provide valuable information to guide the continued development of QuizGuardian. Operational data and user feedback will support future feature enhancements, performance optimisation, infrastructure planning, and service improvements, ensuring that the platform continues to meet the evolving needs of teaching and learning.

Documentation and Lecturer Access

The QuizGuardian portal is available at:

https://apps-el.umt.edu.my/quizguardian

During the pilot testing programme, this portal is intended for system documentation, user guides, announcements, and lecturer access. Lecturers can obtain information on configuring and managing QuizGuardian for online quizzes, while students are not required to access this portal. Whenever QuizGuardian is enabled for an assessment, students will access the platform automatically through the Learning Management System.

Technical Support

Lecturers and students who require technical assistance during the pilot testing programme are encouraged to contact the e-Learning Technical Team.

Email: el@umt.edu.my

The technical support team is available to provide assistance with technical enquiries, resolve issues encountered during online quizzes, and collect feedback that will contribute to the continuous improvement of QuizGuardian.

Supporting the Future of Digital Assessment

QuizGuardian represents an important milestone in the ongoing development of digital learning technologies. By developing an in-house online quiz proctoring platform, the University has established a flexible and sustainable solution that can continue to evolve alongside institutional teaching and learning requirements.

The knowledge and experience gained throughout the pilot testing programme will provide the foundation for future enhancements, ensuring that QuizGuardian continues to deliver a secure, reliable, and user-friendly online proctoring environment while supporting high-quality digital assessment for years to come.
